Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons is a professional qualification to practise as a senior surgeon in Ireland or the United Kingdom. It is bestowed by the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, though strictly the unqualified initials refer to the London College. Highlights from RCSEd's Surgical Skills Competition Final 2017. This one-of-a-kind, national surgical skills competition is run by Britain's oldest Royal Surgical College, in association with Medtronic. The competition began in September 2016 with 19 regional rounds across the UK during which the students were asked to undertake a series of demanding surgical skills tests, with the winner of each heat announced on the night. With only 8% of medical undergraduates qualifying as surgeons in one of the ten specialties, surgery is an incredibly competitive area, so being able to demonstrate the commitment and the skills to become a surgeon at this early stage puts students at a great advantage later in their career. Quite simply, improving quality leads to fewer complications, and that translates into better outcomes and greater access for patients, as well as lower costs.
